A provision to exempt civilian Defense Department employees from President Trump’s controversial executive orders aimed at stripping two-thirds of the federal workforce of their collective bargaining rights survived House debate on the annual Defense policy bill, which passed Wednesday by a vote of 231-196.The March and August orders cited a seldom-used provision of the 1978 Civil Service Reform Act to ban unions across much of the federal government under the auspices of national security. But in July, the House Armed Services Committee voted to include a provision in the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 3838) that would bar the use of…

The Trump administration acted illegally in firing roughly 25,000 newly hired and promoted federal employees, a federal court ruled in a final decision issued on Friday. Agencies will not be required to re-hire the people they fired illegally, but must send them a letter saying they were not fired for performance reasons. In the ruling, U.S. District Judge William Alsup said the firings were illegally directed by the Office of Personnel Management, rejecting the administration’s argument that each agency acted on its own. Alsup’s ruling comes months after the Supreme Court knocked down his previous preliminary injunction on the firings. In his final decision, the…

This profession we call “gunwriter” rose to prominence with the introduction of sporting magazines in the late 1800s. The field grew larger as our population grew, and the technology and social aspects allowed an even bigger audience. At one point, many of the top magazines had circulations in the millions. The guys who wrote about guns at that level had paid their dues. They had to be right, as their work was filtered through an editorial board and judged by all those readers. They were true experts in the field, well respected and extremely knowledgeable. The next generation saw a…

While dealers’ shelves have been flooded by dozens of both domestically built and imported renditions, one iconic entity has yet to put its hat in the ring—until now. Known for its…
