First Look: SIG Sauer MCX 6.8x51mm Spear

by Braxton Taylor

SIG Sauer is now selling a semi-automatic, civilian version of the U.S. military’s rifle, the MCX Spear chambered in a new proprietary cartridge known as the .277 Fury or 6.8x51mm. The new SIG Sauer MCX Spear is based on the XM-7 NGSW (Next Generation Squad Weapon), which combines the traditional layout and design of an AR-10 pattern rifle with some modern tweaks including SIG Sauer’s proprietary semi-automatic, gas-operated piston-driven rifle action. Like its AR-10-pattern ancestors the MCX Spear is composed of upper and lower receivers that join together. The MCX Spear design omits a buffer-tube assembly, so a push-button Magpul SL-M folding stock that folds to the left is standard. The MCX Spear’s lower receiver is also designed with fully ambidextrous controls, and the upper receiver includes a full-length M-Lok freefloat handguard and a 16-inch barrel. Lastly, a SIG Clutch-Lok QD flash hider comes standard as its muzzle device. This flash hider can directly mount SIG Sauer’s NG-68SPEAR-QD monolithic additive design suppressor. Unlike the semi-automatic MCX Spear, these suppressors are identical to the units in service with the US Government

SIG Sauer’s .277 Fury/6.8x51mm round represents a pivot in rifle ammunition design. The company has arrived with the 6.8X51mm Hybrid Ball cartridge that uses a 113-grain, solid-copper bullet. This rifle cartridge has a steel case-head and brass casing that was designed to pair with the new 6.8X51mm MCX Spear rifle. The bullet from this round has a standard muzzle velocity of 3,200 fps out of the MCX Spear’s 16-inch barrel. The Hybrid Case Technology harnesses the power of the high-pressure rounds to deliver magnum performance in a short action cartridge, resulting in a flatter trajectory and increased energy on target.
