The Importance of Being Present in Firearms Training

Hey guys, I’m retired Navy SEAL sniper instructor, Chris Sajnog, and the founder of the SEAL training system. In this post, I want to teach you meditation and the importance of being present to become the best shooter you can be. Now let’s go ahead and get started.

Being Present

When I talk about being present, I want to make sure we’re clear that it means that you’re using all your senses to take in the data from everything around you. So when you’re shooting, you’re not thinking about how you shot in the past, and you’re not thinking about what type of shooter you were.

On the other side, if you’re thinking about the future, and you’re thinking about how good of a shooter you want to be, you’re not being present in your shooting. So you need to be present, to be able to take in the data.

How Do You Become Present?

Next in the importance of being present, all you need to do is learn how to meditate. I talked about this in a lot of my other posts, because it is so important.

When you learn to meditate, you learn to become present. You learn to take in what’s going on around you. You get to use all your senses to take in data and focus on what you need to focus on.

When you become good at meditation, your mind begins to become clearer and more focused. Then when you’re shooting, you’re able to use every cell in your body to give you input into your brain.

An example of this might be if you’re being totally present while you’re shooting and you shoot your gun. You’ll be able to sense from the cells in your hand where your grip is a little loose and where you need to work on it.

An instructor cannot tell you that that spot in your hand is a little loose. Nobody can tell you. That’s why you’re the best firearms instructor you have.

So that’s it, that’s all I have for you today about the importance of being present. And until next time, keep paving your path to perfection.
