Best Tasting Powdered Milk 20-Year Shelf Life Long Term Storage

Powdered milk could be an essential part of the prepper pantry. Long-term storage of milk… I’ll tell you what we’ve done to solve this problem and what we specifically buy.

Powdered Milk in Bulk For Long-Term Storage

When I began prepping seriously, I decided to look into powdered milk. Milk goes with many things and is an essential ingredient in many recipes. Additionally, I valued its protein content, calcium, vitamin D, A, and others. It is an excellent addition to one’s overall long-term survival food storage.

I discovered that powdered milk commonly comes in vacuum-sealed #10 cans for optimal shelf life and long-term storage, and that many survival food companies sell it. It is also commonly available in grocery stores, although not explicitly packaged for long-term shelf life/storage.

I purchased from several different companies, including the grocery store. After sampling, I decided to commit to powdered milk from Augason Farms. We like the taste compared to other powdered milks, and I trust their brand longevity and reputation.

Augason Farms Powdered Milk For Long-Term Shelf Life

Augason Farms offers two powdered milk choices: Morning Moo’s and Country Fresh Instant. Both are certified gluten-free powdered milk. Although they specify a 20-year shelf life, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 25-year shelf life or more under ideal storage conditions.

Morning Moo’s Powdered Milk

‘Morning Moo’s’ is actually a ‘milk alternative.’ Its main ingredient is whey, and it includes nonfat dry milk and creamer solids. There is less than 1 gram of added sugar per serving. I like the taste of this one.

We decided to buy it to discover how it tasted. After our first pitcher, we were hooked. This is not the powdered milk of our youth—it tastes good!

Country Fresh Powdered Milk

‘Country Fresh’ is Augason Farms’ most popular instant nonfat dry milk. It has one ingredient: nonfat dry milk.. Both Morning Moo’s and Country Fresh varieties have nearly 5-star reviews.

Makes up to 2.5 gallons of milk:

Here’s a pro tip: After mixing your first batch, resist the temptation to taste it immediately. Instead, pop it in the fridge for a few hours. Trust me, the flavors develop beautifully when they’re cold. And when you mix it, remember to use a whisk, not a spoon. Mixing is way easier that way.

This powdered milk has an unopened 20 – 25-year shelf life—that’s some tremendous long-term storage! It has a one—to two-year shelf life if opened.

With powdered milk, there is no waste. You can mix as much or as little as you need, making it a practical solution. For the two of us, I mix 6 cups at a time. I rotate two pitchers, so when one is getting low, I mix another batch so there is always some that is refrigerator cold.

Update: A Decade Later…

We have purchased this powdered milk on and off throughout all these years. It has always been great. We keep a good number of these #10 cans in our long-term preparedness food storage. It’s perfect for that.

Morning Moo’s

  • 93 1-cup Servings
  • 5.8 Gallons
  • 6,510 Calories
  • Makes approximately 5.8 gallons
  • Certified Gluten-Free
  • Up to a 25 Year Shelf Life!

Oh, powdered milk’s shelf life will depend on how it’s packaged. Typical grocery-store powdered milk is not packaged in vacuum-sealed #10 cans like I referenced above. Instead, it’s in these soft packs or a cardboard-type container. So shelf life is going to be much, much shorter. A year or two?
