First Look: Kratos Design Scout Mount

by Braxton Taylor

Kratos Design Group recently introduced its new Ruggedize Scout Mount for M-Lok-compatible handguards and rail systems found on modern tactical rifles, carbines and shotguns. The Kratos Ruggedized Scout Mount is designed to grab the body of a SureFire-footprint tactical light and hold it at 45 degrees inboard, while the mount itself is still sitting at the standard 90-degree location on the rail. This angle provides versatility and allows end users to better configure their tactical carbines to their specific needs. For example, the Kratos Scout Mount allows certain light bodies to be used in conjunction with the BE Meyers MAWL device on the same side, something that isn’t always feasible, especially for shooters who use night-vision devices.

The Kratos Scout Mount itself is fully reversible and easily installed. All that’s needed is a T25 Torx bit and a 3/32-inch hex driver (not included). Kratos manufactures these mounts from 7075 T6 aluminum and offers them in anodized black, flat dark earth and OD green colors. Total mount weight is only half of an ounce (16 grams).

Unlike many mounts that rely solely on screw tension, the KDG Scout Mount is designed with recesses that provide additional support to the mounting lugs. This three-sided support structure increases the mount’s durability in the event of impacts to the light.

The mount is reversible and can be positioned at various locations along the rail. When oriented upwards, the light can be placed at 1:30 or 10:30. When oriented downwards, the light can be placed at 4:30 or 6:30.
