Pepper Spray Discharge Patterns

Stream

The most common pepper spray discharge is the stream pattern. It’s popular because it can be aimed directly in a concentrated stream.

Fog | Mist

The fog pattern can be effective when trying to incapacitate more than one target. However, since it is a fog, you may experience some pepper spray blow-back yourself. You can just move away or backward as you spray.

Foam | Gel

How Far Does Pepper Spray Go?

Depending upon the wind, the following are typical expectations:

Stream Spray (8 – 12 feet)

Most canisters that use a stream spray pattern will reach 8 to 12 feet.

Fog| Cone | Mist Spray (6 – 12 feet)

Canisters using a fog/cone or mist spray will reach 6 to 12 feet. Cone delivery products are typically 10 feet.

Gel (10 – 14 feet)

Gel sprays typically spray 20% further than a stream. So, 10 to 14 feet.

How Long To Pepper Spray An Attacker

SABRE recommends that the canister be sprayed until the attacker is incapacitated. Once the attacker is stopped, escape immediately and call the police.

Pepper Spray Tips

1- KNOW HOW TO USE IT. Maybe have an inert can for practice drawing and spraying it. If people don’t practice, they may forget to flip the thumb switch or cover their own face with the opposite arm in an attack situation.

2- MAKE SURE IT IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE. It should not be buried at the bottom of a purse, so you must dig for it while being attacked. Seconds count.

Could you consider carrying pepper spray on a key chain? It’s beneficial and easily accessible while walking to or from your vehicle in a public place, etc., while holding your keys.

Your keys should always be out before exiting a store (or wherever). It’s best to get into the habit of holding the set of keys by the pepper spray canister. This will enable quick use if suddenly attacked.

Walk confidently with situational awareness of what’s going on around you! Unfortunately, too many people are narrowly focused on their own little world and oblivious to their surroundings as they walk, and could easily be surprised by a predator.

Are there any restrictions regarding the use and sale?

Evidently legal in all 50 States. However, some have specific regulations and varying restrictions. Please take a look at the list below.

Familiarize yourself with your local laws. If you have a question, contact your local police department.

Here is a list that I gleaned from SABRE. Since laws change, please do your due diligence to verify your state and local laws.

Alaska: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be sold to minors or online. To carry on school property, the user must be at least 21 years old. 

Arkansas: Pepper spray and gel canisters cannot exceed 5.9 oz.

California: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be purchased, possessed, or used by: minors, felons, or addicts. Product canisters cannot exceed 2.5 oz.

Delaware: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be sold, given, or transferred to minors without the permission of a legal guardian.

Florida: Pepper spray and gel canisters cannot exceed 2 oz.

Hawaii: Pepper sprays and gel cannot be sold online and cannot contain more than 0.5 oz

Illinois: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be sold to minors. 

Maryland: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be sold to minors. Pepper sprays and gels cannot be carried on public school property. 

Massachusetts: A license is required to sell or carry pepper sprays and gels. Only licensed firearms dealers can sell pepper sprays and gels, and those ages 15 to 18 must obtain a firearms ID card in order to purchase. Pepper sprays and gels cannot be sold online. 

Michigan: Only SABRE RED formula is permitted. The SABRE 3-in-1 formula is not currently legal. 

Minnesota: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be possessed by anyone under the age of 16 without written permission of legal guardian. 

New Jersey: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be possessed by a minor or felon. Product canisters cannot contain more than 0.75 oz.

Nevada: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be sold to minors. Product canisters cannot contain more than 2 oz. The SABRE 3-in-1 formula canisters over 2oz are currently not legal.

New York: Product canisters cannot contain more than 0.75 oz. and the strength cannot exceed 0.7% major capsaicinoids. Pepper sprays and gels can only be sold by licensed firearms dealers and licensed pharmacists. It is illegal to ship pepper sprays and gels to New York. Purchases must be made in person, with a maximum of two sprays per purchase.

North Carolina: Pepper spray and gel canisters cannot exceed 5.29 oz and cannot be possessed by felon. 

Rhode Island: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be sold to minors.

South Carolina: Pepper spray and gel canisters cannot exceed 1.69 oz.

Wisconsin: Pepper sprays and gels cannot be possessed by a minor or felon. The SABRE 3-in-1 formula is not currently legal.
