Announcing MeatEater’s New Podcast, ‘The American West’ with Dan Flores

by Braxton Taylor

We are so excited to announce the latest addition to the MeatEater Podcast Network, The American West with Dan Flores.

New York Times best-selling author Dan Flores is one of America’s most celebrated historians, renowned for his deep explorations of the country’s landscapes and the remarkable figures who shaped them. While he has 11 acclaimed books to his name, Flores is first and foremost a teacher. He served as Professor Emeritus of Western History at the University of Montana, where he taught MeatEater founder Steven Rinella and trivia champion Randall Williams as graduate students. Flores reunites with his former students and brings a lifetime of expertise and storytelling to this new podcast.

“By focusing on deep time, wild animals, native peoples, and the West’s unique environments, Flores will challenge your understanding of the American West, and he will help to explain why it is the way it is today,” Steve said. “I count Dan Flores as a friend; we do not agree on everything, but he has had a massive impact on my understanding of American history, and I invite you to be challenged by him in the same way.”

Flores presents a big-picture history of an American West you’ve never encountered. Covering a vast time span in a Western America whose landscapes and wild animals drew people from around the world, this podcast tells a new story of our most fascinating region.

This first episode emphasizes the West’s true age by focusing on the great Chacoan Empire of a thousand years ago and what happened among its refugees in the Southwest in the wake of Chaco’s collapse from environmental causes.
