Free Concerts for Navy Families Featuring Top Artists

Sailors and military families at dozens of Navy installations will get free concerts from Teddy Swims, Miranda Lambert, Fitz and The Tantrums and Shaquille O’Neal over the coming months as the service expands its Operation MWR entertainment series through spring 2027.

Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation announced Friday that Operation MWR will bring free live entertainment to 50 Navy installations around the world through April 2027. The next concert is Saturday at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington, where Fitz and The Tantrums will perform with country singer Alana Springsteen.

The tour continues Sunday at Naval Base Kitsap with Fitz and The Tantrums and Parmalee. One of the biggest shows on the schedule follows Aug. 29 at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, where Teddy Swims will headline with Miranda Lambert as a special guest and DJ Vito opening.

Other confirmed dates include Preston James and Band at Naval Weapons Station Crane in Indiana on Sept. 11 and comedian and magician Michael Kent at Naval Support Activity Saratoga Springs in New York on Oct. 2.

Then, on Oct. 17, former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal will trade the basketball court for the DJ booth when his electronic music alter ego, DJ Diesel, performs at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois.

Artists have not yet been announced for an Oct. 10 event at Naval Base San Diego or an April 30, 2027, show at Naval Air Station Panama City in Florida. The Navy said more performers, locations and dates will be announced as the series continues.

Who Can Attend the Free Navy Concerts?

Operation MWR events are free to eligible MWR patrons. Most events do not require advance registration, according to Commander, Navy Installations Command, the shore command led by Vice Adm. Scott Gray, though individual bases can set their own access requirements and some venues have limited capacity.

That means sailors and families planning to attend should check with the hosting installation before heading to a show, particularly if they need base access or are traveling from another installation.

The Navy’s Operation MWR website will carry updated schedules, performer announcements and information for individual events.

The concerts are part of a broader effort by Navy leaders to tie quality-of-life programs to retention, morale and military readiness.

“Quality of Service is about ensuring our Sailors and their families have the support, connections and opportunities they need to thrive,” Vice Adm. Scott Gray said in the announcement.

Gray said recreational programs can help sailors manage stress and build stronger connections with their families and units, particularly as operational demands pull crews through deployments, extended training and irregular schedules.

That philosophy has increasingly appeared across Navy quality-of-service initiatives. CNIC has recently announced new investments in barracks, child care, food service and wellness programs, often framing living conditions and family support as readiness issues rather than perks separate from the mission.

Operation MWR Has Been Getting Bigger

Operation MWR began in 2024 with 65 free events at Navy installations around the world. The first run extended beyond traditional concerts and included comedy performances, interactive events and other entertainment. Musical acts that year included Dierks Bentley, Ludacris, Goo Goo Dolls, Switchfoot and The All-American Rejects.

The program has since drawn some sizable base crowds.

About 20,000 people attended an Operation MWR concert at Naval Station Norfolk in October 2025 featuring Jelly Roll, Gwen Stefani and Hueston, according to Navy MWR.

Three days later, roughly 30,000 people packed the flight line at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida for performances by Jelly Roll, Shaboozey and Hueston.

The 2026 run has already started. More than 8,000 sailors, military families and community members attended an April 18 concert at NAS Pensacola featuring Kane Brown and Russell Dickerson, held alongside the installation’s 200th birthday celebration. Brett Young later performed at Naval Base Guam in June.

Now the program is spreading those shows across dozens of installations rather than concentrating them in a few large fleet areas.

For sailors nowhere near Norfolk when Teddy Swims and Miranda Lambert arrive later this month, there may still be a concert headed their way. The Navy says the currently announced lineup represents only part of the schedule stretching into April.

• Oct. 2: Naval Support Activity Saratoga Springs, New York: Michael Kent
• Oct. 10: Naval Base San Diego, California: Artist to be announced
• Oct. 17: Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois: DJ Diesel, also known as Shaquille O’Neal
• April 30, 2027: NAS Panama City, Florida: Artist to be announced

The Navy said additional dates and performers will be released throughout the series.
