Naval Base Barracks’ $12M Renovation Completes First of Six Housing Projects

The first of six housing projects at a naval base is complete, part of a broader $12.1 million renovation project.

New furnishings were the final touch in completing new living quarters at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton (NBK-Bremerton) as part of the Navy’s six overall sustainment, restoration and modernization projects funded through the Barracks Task Force. The projects are part of a larger, multi-year investment from the Secretary of Defense’s Barracks Task Force to provide clean, comfortable and safe Unaccompanied Housing (UH).

The renovations are correlated to the advancement of the Navy’s “No Sailor Living Afloat” initiative, aimed to increase the number of sailors who move off docked ships and into high-quality shore housing.

“Quality of service is inseparable from readiness,” said Vice Adm. Scott Gray, commander of Navy Installations Command, in a statement. “Providing safe, comfortable, and clean housing is a responsibility we owe to every sailor who volunteers to serve.

“Completing this project at Kitsap is an important step in a much larger, multiyear effort to improve unaccompanied housing across the Navy.”

Officials said that the full 10-story, 152-room building renovation includes 304 new beds and spruces up a facility negatively impacted by fire and water damage sustained in August 2025.

Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Northwest completed structural repairs 30 days ahead of schedule, according to the base, passing final inspection in April 2026.

What Barracks Renovations Include

Beyond the living refurbishments, the NBK-Bremerton projects offer sailors other updates and amenities.

They include water intrusion remediation and structural safety upgrades, while common areas now include dedicated recreation and community lounges on every floor.

Those areas provide diverse spaces for service members to relax and connect, officials said.

They feature a pool and foosball area on the first floor; electronic gaming rooms on floors two and nine; theater rooms on the third and eighth floors; a tabletop gaming lounge on the fourth floor; dedicated wellness spaces including a yoga studio on the fifth floor; a “Zen Den” library on the sixth floor; and arcades on the seventh and tenth floors.

“Completing a project of this scope ahead of schedule is a direct result of strong teamwork between our installation, region, and engineering partners,” said Capt. Alex Baerg, Naval Base Kitsap commanding officer, in a statement. “This milestone proves that with clear priorities and focused investment, we can rapidly revitalize our shore facilities and deliver lasting improvements across the Navy.”

Commander, Navy Installations Command is spending approximately $375 million from the One Big Beautiful Bill legislation approved by Congress to modernize barracks through structural overhauls and quality-of-life improvements.
