An 8-ounce butane canister can last about an hour on high heat in many portable butane stoves, although the actual runtime depends on the stove and flame setting. Iwatani rates its VA-30 at about 70 minutes per can and its higher-output 35FW at 55 minutes. A Gas One GS-3700 works out to about 68 minutes based on its published fuel-consumption rate.
Most cooking doesn’t require running the burner wide open the entire time, so actual usable cooking time can be longer.
The more useful question during a power outage is this: How many minutes will you actually run the burner each day?

Iwatani provides direct maximum-power runtime figures. Gas One takes a slightly different approach. Its GS-3700 manual lists fuel consumption at 200 grams per hour. Since its standard butane can contains 227 grams, that works out to about 68 minutes at that fuel-consumption rate.
Coleman rates its 7,650 BTU Classic stove for up to 1.25 hours on high, although it uses a slightly larger 8.8-ounce cylinder.
These numbers also show why I wouldn’t estimate runtime from BTU rating alone. For outage planning, use your stove manufacturer’s runtime or fuel-consumption figure when one is available.
How Many Butane Canisters Do You Need for a Power Outage?
The tables below show how many 8-ounce canisters you would need at 15, 30, or 45 minutes of burner use per day, assuming maximum output. That makes these conservative planning numbers.
The tables below use 70-minute and 55-minute maximum-runtime examples. The 70-minute table closely matches both the Iwatani VA-30 and the calculated Gas One GS-3700 runtime. The 55-minute table represents a higher-output stove such as the Iwatani 35FW.
If you don’t know your stove’s actual fuel consumption, the 55-minute table provides a more conservative starting point than assuming a can will last two or three hours.

The numbers are rounded up to whole canisters. I would also keep some extra fuel rather than plan on using the last can down to the final drop.

A Simple Formula for Butane Fuel Planning
You can use the same method with another butane stove if the manufacturer gives you a reliable full-power runtime.
The basic calculation is:
Daily burner minutes × number of days ÷ minutes per canister
For the VA-30, 30 minutes per day for seven days equals 210 burner minutes.
210 ÷ 70 minutes per can = 3 cans
Real-World Butane Runtime Can Be Longer
Most of us don’t cook everything with the burner at maximum. You may use high heat to bring water to a boil, then turn it down. A covered pot can also reduce cooking time and fuel use.
Wind and temperature matter too. Moving air carries heat away from the cookware, while cold temperatures can affect butane performance. Remember that Iwatani’s published runtime was measured at 68-77°F.
Count Burner Minutes Instead of Counting Meals
I think burner time is a much better way to build an emergency cooking plan than simply saying, “I need enough fuel for three meals a day.”
Heating a can of stew requires very different burner time than starting with dried beans. Coffee, boiling water, and heating water for cleanup also count.
A useful preparedness exercise is to cook one day’s outage menu with your butane stove while keeping track of the actual burner time.
A Thermal Cooker Can Stretch Your Butane Supply
Foods that simmer for a long time can use quite a bit of stored fuel. This is one reason I like a thermal cooker.
I bought a Thermos thermal cooker years ago and we’ve used it many times. After heating the food, the insulated cooker holds that heat and lets the food continue cooking without keeping the burner lit. It’s especially useful for foods such as rice, beans, soups, and stews.

Use the Correct Butane Fuel
The Iwatani runtime figures used here apply to the company’s BU-6 fuel canister. Iwatani instructs owners to use Iwatani-brand butane fuel with its appliances for maximum safety and performance.

How Much Butane Should You Store?
Use the tables as a starting point, then add some reserve rather than planning to use every canister completely.
Better yet, time your burner use during one normal outage-style cooking day. That will give you a much better fuel estimate for your household than a generic “hours per canister” number.
