It’s a fact! Higher education is expensive. With the average cost of a four-year bachelor’s degree at a public in-state university exceeding $110,000 and average student loan balances topping $43,000, funding college is a major hurdle for many prospective students.

That is where the military can help. Through education programs like Tuition Assistance (TA), the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and Loan Repayment Programs (LRP), the U.S. military offers a clear path to graduating debt-free or wiping out existing student debt.

Key Requirements: Which Student Loans Qualify for LRP?

Not all student debt is eligible for military loan repayment programs. To qualify, loans must meet strict federal criteria and be explicitly written into your enlistment contract.

Qualifying Federal Loans:

  • Stafford Loans
  • Perkins Loans
  • William D. Ford Direct Loans
  • Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS)
  • Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) (only for loans incurred directly for the enlistment applicant)
  • Consolidated Loans (only for loans incurred directly for the participant’s education)

Non-Qualifying Loans:

  • Private student loans
  • Equity loans
  • State-funded loans
  • Institutional loans
  • Consolidated loans for someone else (spouse, siblings, children)

Critical Note: The Loan Repayment Program is only approved if it is guaranteed in writing in your enlistment contract before you ship out. Work closely with your recruiter to verify that your loans qualify before signing.
