John Brewster “JB” Hodgdon—co-founder of Hodgdon Powder Company—passed away on June 13 at the age of 88. He was born Oct. 16, 1936, to Bruce and Amy Hodgdon, grew up in suburban Kansas City and was a lifelong resident of Kansas. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1959 with a degree in business. Hodgdon was active in his hometown, with first responders, Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America) and the classic-car community holding special places in his heart. Hodgdon held many positions at the Hodgdon Powder Company. In the early days, he packaged powder at the…
On June 6, President Trump signed two executive orders designed to build back up the U.S. civilian drone industry: one orders various agencies to promote American drone exports, and the other limits government purchases of drones linked to the Chinese government. Whether these measures are too little, too late to turn around a global market that has been dominated by China for over a decade remains to be seen. But what it does miss is that China’s drone industry is not merely a story of civilian systems, but of military ones as well—and a strategic plan that yokes multiple parts…
Vibration, improper installation, pounding recoil and hard use conspire to rattle mounted gun accessories loose. It can be disastrous, so Shooting Illustrated consulted with some of the industry’s foremost experts. The polymers in today’s firearms and accessories provide long-lasting service and deliver combat-proven performance. Run a Google search to discover if thread-locking compound should be used on plastic parts, however, and the AI-generated response warns against doing so—a caution largely fueled by radio-control hobbyists. Gun owners can ignore that answer, according to Jon Canipe, director of Product Management of Firearm Accessories at Magpul. “We always recommend the use of a…

NAVAL AIR STATION PATUXENT RIVER, Md.—The Navy envisions future submarine-hunting operations with seamless data sharing between robot and human-piloted aircraft, and a boost from artificial intelligence to make sense of a complex maritime environment. Platforms like Northrop Grumman’s MQ-4C Triton and Boeing’s P-8A Poseidon siphon a lot of data from their environment in real time.To make sense of it all and create a comprehensive intelligence and surveillance picture, the Navy uses Minotaur software to stitch several systems together—cameras, communications systems, and radars.“That Minotaur framework is the same framework that will be installed on the future P-8A increment 3 aircraft that are…
Thousands of years ago Native people in the West chose, among all the possibilities, the coyote as the deity animal in their various stories of North America’s creation. Then they proceeded to fashion thousands of stories around “Old Man America,” the oldest literary figure in America. Long described as a Trickster, the deity Coyote actually was a human avatar whose stories richly conveyed human nature in both its admirable and not-so-admirable forms. As part coyote and part human, deity Coyote stands in a progression of human gods, one whose insights into human nature have allowed him to survive into the…
The Humvee’s days are over. It’s weak, slow and about as sophisticated as a stone tomahawk. The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, on the other hand — it’s a real technical wonder. It’s as strong as an ox, smoother than a Rolls-Royce and takes on the enemy with the processing power of Iron Man’s suit. That was the pitch, anyway. The Pentagon approved the JLTV as a program of record in 2009, after the Humvee’s limitations came to light in Iraq and Afghanistan. Army and Marine Corps leadership jumped at the chance to upgrade and placed orders, then revised them upward, as…
For many soldiers, the Army’s 250th birthday parade in Washington, D.C., on Saturday was a celebration they managed to divorce from its politically charged backdrop, including its overlap with President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday and the president’s deployment of troops against protesters in Los Angeles.”This was about us, not him,” one senior noncommissioned officer told Military.com.Still, for other troops, it was hard to ignore the unusual imagery of parading military hardware in the nation’s capital — a long-standing Trump aspiration but also a hallmark of authoritarian regimes like Russia and North Korea — and, to them, it was an enormous…
The U.S. military has moved additional ships and tanker aircraft into the Middle East and hurried a carrier to the region, officials have confirmed to Military.com, as Israel and Iran continue to exchange missile barrages and threaten to plunge the region into war.As tensions rise, a Democratic senator is introducing legislation to prevent President Donald Trump from taking U.S. military action against Iran without explicit congressional approval.”I am deeply concerned that the recent escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran could quickly pull the United States into another endless conflict,” Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said in a statement Monday announcing…
