At long last, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is getting a much-requested update on July 7, nearly two years since its original release.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is becoming a standalone game on July 7. In other words, Activision is separating the shooter from the controversial Call of Duty HQ app, which has been the only way to access Black Ops 6 since its October 2024 release.
Activision introduced Call of Duty HQ in November 2023 as a unified entry point for its first-person shooter franchise, bringing recent mainline installments and the free-to-play battle royale game Warzone together under one launcher. The company framed the app as a way to simplify switching between games and managing files, but the rollout quickly divided players. Many criticized the added installation steps, massive downloads, and the app’s tendency to bury newer releases inside a central hub. Activision began unwinding parts of that setup in 2025, when it removed Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 from Call of Duty HQ.
Black Ops 6 Is Leaving Call of Duty HQ on July 7
Black Ops 6 will follow suit on July 7, Activision has announced. At 9 a.m. PT, the 2024 title will move out of the main Call of Duty install and become a standalone download. Owners will then be able to launch the game directly after redownloading this upcoming standalone version, while legacy content tied to Black Ops 6 modes inside the main install will be removed automatically to free up storage space.
The July 7 update may not come as a surprise to the most attentive of fans, as rumors of Black Ops 6 leaving Call of Duty HQ have been circulating online since late April 2026. Based on the current cadence, Black Ops 7 will be the next game to depart the launcher, ostensibly around summer 2027.
