While Ubisoft is still staying quiet about what’s coming in the next Far Cry installment, a notable dataminer has recently leaked details about what the development team is planning for Far Cry 7, and the claims suggest a major departure from the series’ formula. Far Cry fans haven’t seen a new entry since 2021, marking the longest stretch without a new game for a franchise that had reliably maintained three to four-year development cycles.
Far Cry has been a staple franchise for Ubisoft for over two decades now; however, its future remains a mystery. Recent interviews with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot have confirmed that Far Cry currently has two games in production, allegedly codenamed Project Blackbird and Maverick, according to leakers. Previous reports from outlets like Insider Gaming have indicated that neither of those projects is progressing smoothly, following significant layoffs at Ubisoft and ongoing reworks to both games, which could be why it’s taken so long for a Far Cry project to materialize. Now, a new batch of rumors has sprung up about where the franchise is headed.
Far Cry 7 Leak Points to 72-Hour Time Limit and Extraction Loop
On July 6, Ubisoft dataminer Rogue I Tx took to Twitter to give a brief rundown of what gamers can expect from Far Cry 7, which longtime fans may notice is a huge departure from the typical Far Cry title. A lot of these bullet points are the leaker doubling down on claims they made earlier this year and last year. According to Rogue I Tx, the next game in the series will be a PvE/PvP extraction shooter in which players will have 72 hours to rescue their family members from the Sons of Truth, an enemy faction previously rumored to feature Cillian Murphy as Far Cry 7‘s headlining villain. Additionally, Rogue states that the game will have safehouses and the always controversial weapon durability mechanic. In a later post, the dataminer clarifies that Far Cry 7 will, in fact, feature a campaign along with the PvE mode. However, as with any leak, fans should take this information with a grain of salt.
Previous rumors from the same leaker largely match, including the family-saving extraction gameplay loop and the 72-hour time limit. Rogue I Tx has also previously stated that Far Cry 7 will be set in Alaska and leaked entire images and audio files from the game, which were subsequently wiped following a DMCA takedown notice. Notably, Rogue has claimed that Far Cry 7 is targeting a launch window between fiscal quarters 2 and 4 of 2027, but has echoed other insiders by saying the project is in a fragile state and could be canceled.
