Every U.S. airline has some kind of frequent flier program that allows flyers to earn miles for every trip they take that can later be redeemed for discounted travel. American Airlines has launched a different kind of program that puts those miles to use for military charities.

American Airlines’ new “Miles for Heroes” program allows its AAdvantage® frequent flyers to donate their airline miles to organizations that support the country’s military community.

Starting this month, American Airlines’ fliers can donate miles to three organizations— the Gary Sinise Foundation, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, and the Medal of Honor Foundation—tying the effort to National Purple Heart Day, which is observed each August to honor service members wounded or killed in combat.

“I think programs like this can have a meaningful impact, especially for service members stationed far away from their families,” Sgt. Jeremy Rodriquez, a 24-year-old U.S Army solider stationed at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX. told Military.com. “The cost of flying home can add up quickly, and military life doesn’t always give us the ability to plan travel months in advance.”

Rules for Frequent Flyer Donation Miles

Under the airline’s rules, a minimum donation of 1,000 miles is required; however, American’s advantage members with a total balance under 1,000 miles can donate their entire balance.

Donations are not tax-deductible, and the actual miles transfer can take up to 48 hours.

American Airlines has touted the program as a way for fliers to show their patriotism and support for our military heroes through organizations that serve veterans, active-duty military members and their families.

“Supporting those who serve our country is incredibly important to American Airlines, and it’s especially meaningful to me as a U.S. Army veteran,” American Airlines’ manager of military and veterans initiatives, Randy Stillinger, said in a statement provided to Military.com. “Through strong partnerships and the generosity of AAdvantage® members who donate their miles, we’re connecting veterans, service members and their families with opportunities that recognize their sacrifices.

“It’s a powerful reflection of the gratitude and respect our team has for the military community.”

Most major U.S. airlines offer active-duty military and their dependents specific benefits, including programs that offer discounted tickets, baggage waivers and priority boarding, depending on the airline.

Many carriers waive excess or heavy bag fees for active military personnel, allowing up to five free checked bags on official orders and two-to-three free bags for leisure travel.

But American’s new ‘Miles for Heroes’ program adds a charitable connection. Each partner organization converts the donated miles into a mission-driven level of support.

The Gary Sinise Foundation uses its partnership with American to power Snowball Express, an annual event that brings together families of fallen military members and first responders. Last year, more than 1,000 American employees helped fly nearly 3,000 participants to Walt Disney World for the event.

The Elizabeth Dole Foundation, which works to strengthen and support military caregivers and their families, relies on American as its official airline partner to fly caregivers across the country.

The Medal of Honor Foundation, which supports the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, is honored through Flagship Valor, a specially themed American Airlines aircraft that serves as a tribute to Medal of Honor recipients and all who have served.

For Sgt. Rodriguez, having an airline discount of any kind—coupled with charitable support under programs like the American Airlines ‘Miles for Heroes’ program—is like a ‘thank you’ for the service, sacrifice and financial challenges that he and other members of the Armed Forces endure throughout their military careers.

“Programs that provide military discounts or allow people to donate unused frequent-flyer miles can help remove some of that financial burden and give service members more opportunities to spend important time with their families,” he said.
