Russian Drone Strike in Romania Injures Civilians Near NATO Border

A Russian drone struck a residential apartment building in eastern Romania near the Ukrainian border, injuring two civilians and intensifying concerns that Moscow’s war against Ukraine is increasingly spilling into NATO territory.

The drone entered Romanian airspace on May 29 during a large-scale Russian attack against targets in neighboring Ukraine before crashing into a residential building in the city of Galați. Two civilians were injured and a fire broke out after the impact, according to Romanian officials and multiple international news reports.

The strike marked one of the most serious known incidents involving a Russian drone impacting a populated civilian area inside a NATO member state since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. NATO leaders condemned the incident and reiterated that the alliance remains committed to defending member states against external threats.

Romanian authorities tracked the drone after it crossed the border and scrambled military aircraft in response. The drone ultimately struck a residential apartment building in Galați before it could be intercepted.

Two people were injured and transported to a hospital following the strike. Romanian officials said the drone caused an explosion and fire, impacting the building.

Video and photographs reported by Euronews showed damage to the upper floors of the apartment building as well as emergency crews responding after flames spread across part of the roof. Residents were evacuated while firefighters worked to contain the blaze and secure the structure.

Romania’s Ministry of National Defense stated that it “firmly condemns the irresponsible actions of the Russian Federation” and said the incident demonstrated Russia’s disregard for international law and Romanian sovereignty.

Romania Demands a Response

Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemned the strike and convened an emergency meeting of the country’s Supreme Council of National Defense following the incident.

Romanian officials also summoned Russia’s ambassador as part of the government’s response.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu stated the government would pursue diplomatic consequences and work with European partners regarding additional sanctions against Russia following the strike.

The incident occurred in a NATO member state that shares a lengthy border with Ukraine and has repeatedly experienced drone incursions since Russia intensified attacks on Ukrainian ports and infrastructure along the Danube River.

Russian officials remained steadfast post-strike. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chair of the Security Council of Russia and the country’s former president, took to social media on Friday, urging the European Union to be “vigilant” during the “war with Russia” that Europe has entered.

“Citizens of EU countries, You should realize your authorities have unilaterally entered into a war with Russia,” Medvedev wrote on X. “So be vigilant and don’t be surprised by anything. The peaceful sleep is over. But you know who to ask why.”

Romanian authorities have reported a growing number of drone-related airspace violations and debris discoveries near the border during the war. NATO countries bordering Ukraine have faced increasing security challenges as the war generates cross-border incidents and air-defense concerns.

NATO Reiterates Defense Commitments

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte responded by declaring that the alliance stands ready to defend “every inch” of NATO territory after the strike.

He described Russia’s actions as reckless and dangerous for the broader region. European leaders similarly condemned the incident, warning that attacks occurring near NATO borders create escalating risks for neighboring countries even when Russian forces claim to be targeting Ukraine.

The strike has renewed attention on NATO air-defense readiness along the alliance’s eastern flank. Earlier this month, NATO forces conducted drone-defense exercises in Romania focused on detecting and defeating unmanned aerial threats near alliance borders. NATO officials have increasingly emphasized counter-drone systems as Russian and Ukrainian unmanned aircraft operate closer to alliance territory.

The Galați strike was not the first drone-related incident involving Romanian territory. Romanian authorities have repeatedly discovered drone debris, tracked airspace incursions, and scrambled aircraft in response to Russian attacks occurring near the border since 2022.

However, this incident was especially significant because civilians were injured after a drone directly struck a residential building inside a NATO member state. Romanian officials described the event as one of the most serious consequences of Russia’s war to affect Romanian territory since the invasion began.

As the war continues and attacks increasingly occur near NATO borders, Romanian leaders are seeking additional air-defense support and anti-drone capabilities to reduce the risk of future incidents.
