Space-A Travel Registration Just Changed: Here’s the New Process

Air Mobility Command’s space-available travel sign-up process has run on the same basic model for years: Fill out a form, email it to whichever passenger terminal you’re departing from, and hope someone on the other end enters it correctly before your window opens. As of March 26, 2026, that changed. AMC launched a new self-signup tool incorporating every AMC location worldwide, and it’s built on fundamentally different plumbing than what came before it.

What Actually Changed

The old system, still technically available, routes a traveler’s information through an email that gets sent to a specific passenger terminal, where staff then manually enter it into GATES, the Global Air Transportation Execution System that AMC actually uses to manifest passengers and allocate seats. That extra manual step is exactly where things have been breaking down recently, AMC has an active notice posted warning that its automated confirmation emails are experiencing technical difficulties, and recommending travelers print their submission as proof of sign-up time in case the email process fails.

The new self-signup tool, accessible at gatesea.mtmc.gov/amctravel, removes that manual hand-off. Travelers enter their information directly into a portal that connects to GATES itself, rather than generating an email that a passenger terminal employee has to process by hand. That’s a genuinely different architecture, not just a redesigned form, and it’s the kind of change that should reduce the likelihood of a sign-up that never actually reaches the terminal.

The new tool is built to handle both space-available and space-required travel sign-ups, whereas the older email-based form was space-A specific. That matters for a segment of travelers, including some retirees and personnel on official travel status, who previously had to navigate a separate process depending on which category applied to their trip.

Rolled Out Everywhere at Once

Unlike a lot of DoD system changes that phase in installation by installation, AMC brought this tool online for every AMC location simultaneously March 26, 2026, rather than piloting it at a handful of terminals first. That’s worth noting for travelers who fly out of multiple terminals over the course of a trip, since it means the same sign-up process now applies whether departing from a stateside hub such as Travis Air Force Base, California, or Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, or an overseas terminal such as Ramstein Air Base, Germany, or Yokota Air Base, Japan, rather than encountering inconsistent systems terminal to terminal.

What Hasn’t Changed

The fundamentals of space-A travel remain the same regardless of which sign-up method a traveler uses. Eligibility is still governed by DoDI 4515.13’s six travel categories. There’s still no guarantee of a seat, and travelers still need to be financially prepared to cover commercial travel costs if a flight becomes unavailable. Active-duty members still need to be in an actual leave or pass status for the duration of their travel window. And the older sign-up paths, the downloadable AMC Form 140 and direct email to a terminal, remain available as alternatives for anyone who prefers them or runs into an issue with the new portal.

What Travelers Should Do Right Now

For anyone signing up for space-A or space-R travel today, the practical move is to use the new self-signup tool at gatesea.mtmc.gov/amctravel as the primary method, since it’s the version AMC built to eliminate the manual entry step that’s been generating problems under the older system. Travelers who still choose the traditional email sign-up should continue following AMC’s current guidance: Print the completed form or confirmation screen before submitting, and follow up directly with the departure terminal if no confirmation arrives, since that older pathway is the one with the known technical issue right now, not the new tool.
