Summer of Freedom: Responsibility, Preparedness, and the American Tradition

Summer has always held a special place in the American story and the celebration of democracy and freedom.

As the days grow longer and families gather for barbecues, road trips, range days, and other holiday traditions, we’re also reminded of something much bigger than fireworks and backyard cookouts.

Independence Day celebrates the birth of a nation founded on the radical idea that individuals possess certain inalienable rights that do not come from governments, kings, or institutions.

Life. Liberty. The pursuit of Happiness.

Words and phrases that are among the most recognizable in American history, but they’re often discussed only in terms of rights. What gets overlooked (especially in the political climate of today) is that those rights and a sense of personal responsibility have always gone hand in hand.

The founders of the United States understood that freedom wasn’t something that could simply be handed to The People and forgotten. It required citizens willing to take ownership of their lives, provide for their families, contribute to their communities, and prepare for uncertainty. Independence has to be practiced and, more importantly, protected.

That understanding remains just as relevant today as it was in 1776 and 1789. Maybe, dare I say, even more so now.

Freedom Means Being Prepared

Preparedness takes many forms.

For others, like myself, it’s a little more in-depth.
